There are a number of posts from individuals interested in using iPod Touches for teaching and Learning. At Culbreth Middle in Chapel Hill, NC we began a pilot this past August to place the iPod Touch in the hands of staff and students.

Our staff development for faculty to roll out the new technology centered on teacher coaches leading their groups in exploration through professional learning communities.

Our AVID students use the iPod Touch in the AVID classroom and in all other courses. They have piloted this program, using the iPod Touches daily for note taking, keeping individual agendas, translation for world languages, and accessing research through the Internet. In addition, our AVID students use many of the apps that teachers sync with these mobile devices. As student leaders, they’ve understood their responsibility to work and share this learning tool in collaborative groups.

This winter we were able to add iPod Touch labs for each of our seven interdisciplinary teams and two labs for our exploratory and resource teams. The interdisciplinary grade level iPod Touch labs are housed with each team and shared among the four content teachers (math, language arts, science, and social studies). These teachers plan together so that their students have access throughout each day. They access the internet as needed and use many apps as well.

Teacher current app favorites include: WordBook, Thesaurus, USA, Countries, Brain Tuner, Blanks, Whiteboard, CoinToss, Lose It!, Word Warp, FlipBook Lite. Of course they are using the included apps: Calendar, Calculator, Notes, Clock, YouTube throughout each day.

We held an iPod Touch Day last week with visitors from all over the state and from across the country. We even had a group from the UK come see our students and teachers in action with the iPod Touch. With almost 400 iPod Touches now in use at Culbreth, we’re happy to share what we’ve learned and what we’re learning.

Ha! Wasn't so quick in the end... got a bit excited!
What a great list Deon! Thanks!
Wow, this is great. Thanks so much Deon, Susan and Sandy! I have a meeting to discuss my proposal today. I was only being Devil's advocate btw and am really sold on it. Just wanted some validation.

This is what I have been preaching as well. It essentially creates a 1:1 learning environment at a fraction of the cost of laptops AND easier to manage.
Every seat in the house was filled for our Apple education seminar at Culbreth Middle this past Thursday. We'll be posting videos next week on our school website. I'll post here as well. I wanted to share the apps our teachers demonstrated for the group across really every curriculum area. The staff was terrific. They are the best!

Fine Arts- Art Envi and Art Lite
Social Studies- World Wiki Plus, iTravel, Translator, Currency, World Guide
EC/Math- Brain Tuner, G Flash Pro
AVID- iProcrastinate
PE- Go Learn Fitness
Language Arts- Word Fu, Voice Memos
Library/Reference- Shakespeare, Stanza
Music/Chorus- iNote Trainer, Pianist

I am sure I will find these videos very useful. Can't wait!
Susan,

I watched the first vodcast on your site, and will be watching for others (especially if you team w/Apple again in Feb). Thanks so much to you and the others on this ning for your time in sharing all your resources. I have been passing along the info learned here to our administration, and eventually our school board, in the hopes that our district will expand the use of touches. Like many of you, we are currently hashing out how this expansion might look as we revise our AUP for the future.
5 Ways to Use iPods in the Classroom http://bit.ly/b2srfu
We just acquired 550 for five schools. Each school will have a number of carts and will be using the touch potentially for a variety of purposes. Right now its getting the things out of their boxes and sync so each contain the same apps. I would love to learn any potholes others might have had with the Bretford Powersync cart and getting a group of 20/40 iPods synced right. Also looking for great apps and I appreciate what you (Susan) listed in your beginning post.
Kris Felicello's iPod touch discussion says that his, "teachers have found some excellent aps to enhance their curriculum. Needless to say the students love them and they increased motivation 10 fold. The challenge now becomes how do we use them to enhance strong lessons and topics." I think that's exactly right as we bring technology in, students tell us the work is more interesting, we see the level of engagement rise. Our challenge becomes making lessons stronger with the availability of these tools.
In addition to the apps people have already listed, I have been working on a web app that will allow you to use your Touches as clickers, just like the classroom response systems that are out there, only better. Since it is a web app it works with any browser and it has been used on desktops, laptops, etc, but I have not had anyone actually use it in a classroom settings with Touches. I've even spent some time configuring the interface for the Touches and iPhones. I'd love to have someone try it out to see how it works with the iPods. Anyone interested in trying it?
Yep. Email me at travellingdeon@me.com, and I'll try it out with my class (who all have iTouches) as soon as I get access!

Thanks

Deon
me too Alan - email me app at kburdick32@comcast.net - have you worked on any other apps?
