I am a 6th-8th (10-13 yrs old) Grade Math Teacher in NYC. I am looking to work on some group projects with other classes. Would like to incorporate Skype, Wikis, and blog discussion into our current curriculum. Need some help. My class website is MrLicata.ning.com if you want to see what we are working on
I see that you are doing a stock market activity. I teach 6th grade in Indiana and am having my students do a stock market graphing activity as well. I would love to discuss this with you on how you started out with this project so that I could tweek mine. I didn't want to give the kids an amount of money, so I allowed them to choose from six different stocks and they needed to buy a total number of 100 shares of stock. I think that it would be interesting to have a blog discussion.
We started off with $25000, they couldn't have more money left than the costs of one share of the cheapest stock. They filled out a stock request form My STocks Form which sent everything to me though Google Docs. The project lasted a month and we followed the stocks about two-three times a week, they created excel sheets to track the progress. Last night and today they created charts to display what happened during the course of the project.
I think it would be great to have a blog discussion, or even use an elluminate session.
I teach a host of classes in West Michigan including a 7th grade math. I just signed up here and thought I might be setting up a ning room for my own class. It's going to take a little to get started, but I am interested in having kids collaborate from a distance.
