Middle Social Studies Collaboration

Hi. My name is Mindy von Freymann. I teach 7th grade Social Studies in a rural town in Ohio. I am interested in establishing a global collaborative project. My students see no diversity in our school system and are very limited as to the experiences they can have. I would love to find other middle school students to collaborate with my students shedding some light on diversity and other cultures. I was thinking of something along the lines of the Silk Road exchange of ideas and the internet exchange of ideas... So far I just have ideas, but would love to find others out there who would like to work through the summer to come up with a global collaborative project. If at all possible I would like to integrate this project in the 2009-2010 school year. Anyone interested???? (wikis, pod casts, e-pals, etc)

I must start off by saying that I am a retired college professor with no classroom experience with K-12 although I have been involved in distance education for over 20 years. That being said, I have had an idea for a project that seems perfect for middle school social studies. Let the students describe the government of their local village (town, city), state, country.
Who are the leaders on the local, state, and national level? An urban NY City student should know about a small town in Oregon or how Chicago differs from them both. Once international connections are made, the students will learn both about alternate forms of government and world leaders. There is a lot of potential here.

I do not know where you are with this, but I would love to involve my 7th graders. Have you developed any specific ideas to date?

Mindy I am creating a course that might interest your students. It teaches culture in a different way. Try out Prehistoric Art and see if you can have the students talk about how each culture had to learn to work together and compare prehistoric cultures around the world.

I also want to collaborate with others from other schools. I particularly wanted to see how different countries teach about war. Is there a difference in England in the way they teach the Revolutionary War today and the way we teach it here.
