How you do you motivate students to achieve more?

To be quite honest I don't think it is any different to adults...

Find out what interests them.

Find out their preferred learning style.

Then deliver the information they are interested in the manner that best suits their preferred learning style.

This may sound simplistic but look at a situation where you might be trying to encourage a dyslexic child that has a preference for artistic pursuits to take more of an interest in outdoor activities. Give them a book on fishing and you're wasting your time. However if you gave him a DVD on outdoor art exhibitions, then you have a significantly better opportunity to gain their attention.

I would go so far as to say that this is one of the major problems in education today. We are attempting to force many students to learn material that they have little interest in, using tools that don't take into consideration their individual ability to process that information effectively. Then we wonder why so many kids have so little interest in their education.
