How has teaching changed since I have been in school?

I am a college student studying to become a teacher. I have only been in the schools a few times and already I have noticed how it's different then when I was in school. When I was in first grade we were just learning how to read and write. Now in first grade they already know how to read and can already write. So much has changed since I was in school. How does this change effect our teaching? We knew what it was like for us when we were little, but now we're becoming teacher's and going into the classroom. Is school going to be the same thing that we have built up in our head? Now in first grade they are also learning math so quickly. Are we just trying to cram more things in for them to learn? Why are we starting things so early? Do we really think this will help them to remember things better?

Morgan,

I can understand where you are coming from, but I believe that education is turning a new leaf. What I mean by that is that since our world is progressively changing, then education will be constantly changing. I know that from my experience in education to see the system constantly altering, it can be alarming and exciting! I find it amazing that students are continuously growing not only intelligently, but creatively, I think that even though we are starting to teach harder concepts at a younger age, it is important to give students the chance to learn as much as they can. However, if schools are going to try and cram as much concepts into a single school year as they can, then the students are not going to be retaining as much as they can. I appreciate your thoughts!!
