Wow, haven't been on here for a while. This forum is growing. What a terrific time to be an Apple person. Seems like those of us who've been at it for a time had some rough years but I think I see a lot of light at the end of tunnel now... My daughter just changed jobs to a company that writes mobile APPS for mainly iPad, iPhone, Touch etc. She left a PC company and is so happy now.... She's an ND grad in CompSCi & Engineering.. Dad is happy too, ha..

Kyla: there is a website called Skype an Author that has a directory of authors willing and able to have a short conversation over Skype about their work or the world of writing.

Was reading this blog post and found another educator Skype website - http://skypeinschools.pbworks.com

Thanks Laura, I will check those those references. I have been playing with Glogster edu. and have a lesson planned with that. It may work well with Classic Gallery....we'll see.
I also just started playing with Animoto. lots to do!

Jerry: three publishing ideas come to mind...

Wix.com is an online application that allows students to create flash websites without having to understand code. There is actually template that looks like an art gallery :) (Classic Gallery Template)
My brilliant husband has used this online program with his year 9 and 10 students without any help but with a bit of in-class tuition I am sure middle school students would be fine.

Another option would be to create the same posters etc. in Pages (the greatest word processing software in the world), save it as a PDF and then upload it to Issuu. Students would be able to see a page turning book/portfolio of their artwork that can be embedded into another website (such as a class blog or wiki). Here is an example of a graphic designers art portfolio.

Final idea... set up an education account with Animoto. Upload the students artwork, get them to choose music to go with it, and Animoto generates an animated slideshow that you can download for free at a low resolution or buy for $5USD. Again, you can also embed this content directly into a class blog or wiki.

Hi, I just tuned in to this group and I'm interested in knowing what others have done to utilize Mac programs with middle school art students. A few years ago I had students create art work, posters, collages, cards, reports using Appleworks.
When support for that died, I switched to using Powerpoint and it's tools to work some of those lessons. I would be interested to hear about websites that students can use for various art applications. Buying software is difficult in my district.

Our kindergarten teacher Skypes with the kids relatives who live in different parts of the world. Sometimes they ask get to ask questions, other times the person reads them a storybook via Skype. The kids get a kick out of it - especially those whose relative it is!
