It's up and running! Yessssssss, after all the planning and installation of the hardware and software, we now have a working Opensim running our virtual world learning space for students on the support program at Debney Park Secondary College, Victoria. Our Sim comprises 9 islands; 6 for students, 1 collaborative pedagogy island, 1 shared sandbox island and 1 gallery island that also has a plenary space. A range of avatars have been created: a master avatar called Roshi Sensie (Japanese Master), 10 guest avatars, 6 student avatars (which they personalize) and avatars for each support-staff member. The students' first project was "Identity and virtual spaces." Students were required to read an overview of the various definitions of identity, view a range of videos on issues of identity, then create several variations of their avatars, including one extreme version, such as; a new species, racial swap, alien, gigantic, insect, alternate sex, animal or furry. After they have finished creating their avatar identities, they take screen shots of them, participate in a plenary and write a reflection on issues of identity. Finally, they post their screen shots and reflections to their ePortfolios on Wikispaces.
