About Me
I'm working with educators across the state to help them develop more student-centered lessons by using inquiry-based and project-based learning. Of course, we believe that Web 2.0 tools can play a major role in student engagement. I am fortunate enough to be working with Sheryl-Nussbaum-Beach and John Norton on this project, as well as a very talatented group of Alabama educators.

All Children Can Learn!

I just returned from the Leadership Alabama Education retreat. It was held in Mobile and began on Thursday afternoon. It concluded today (Saturday at noon). The highlight of the retreat for many was the visit to George Hall Elementary School. George Hall's students come from generational poverty. But, that doesn't hold them back. In fact, the vast majority of George Hall students are performing academically at the highest levels. According to Jim Williams, Executive Director of the Public… Continue

As I have been preparing for Tuesday's Secondary Quarterly Meeting, I've been doing a lot of reading. I've attached an article by Mike Schmoker that I commend to you. Schmoker is a passionate advocate for effective teachers and effective teaching.

In his book, Results Now, he argues that in most schools and districts a "buffer" exists which works against innovation and improvement.

"…school culture and supervision tend to ignore or divert teachers from implementing and… Continue

Hey Cathy,

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country!

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal. More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules.

Do you mind passing my message along to your HS colleagues again?

Thanks,
Jack

Hey Cathy. Thanks for helping to spread the word. We don't have anything for preK-5 just yet, but you are not the first to ask :] It's on our radar.

Hi Cathy,

With your interest in Web 2.0 Tools, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

Hi Cathy. I was wondering if you have any high school contacts who would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
