GUIYANG PRIMARY SCHOOL, CHINA

Posted on January 7, 2009 at 1:36pm 0 Comments

What’s it like to go to elementary school in China? I was able to witness a primary school. Like the high school, students wore uniforms and worked as a seamless member of a larger group. Again, the students were fully engaged and on task. Again, the teacher controlled the learning environment and used a projected PowerPoint to aid in her instruction. Like the high school, students waited for the bell to ring and the teacher to formally begin class. Students laid their heads on the desk and… Continue

A Visit with the Head Master of the Guiyang Experimental High School #3, China

Posted on December 31, 2008 at 7:41am 0 Comments

After the tours, we were able to visit with the head master of the school. She shared much information about the students and the building. The students in the school come from the Guizhou province. The teachers are very good, and she said that the “students are lively.” This is an experimental school because it is a relatively new boarding school funded in 2004. As a result, they are still in the experimental process of implementing the school. Only five teachers live here after 9 o’clock to… Continue

Guiyang Experimental High School #3, China

Posted on December 27, 2008 at 10:43am 0 Comments

The first school that we were able to tour was a high school. Students at the high school begin their day by reciting political readings to help them pass tests. After these readings, students register for school for the day and go to the playground for morning exercises. Students are required to exercise. During the school day, students have four classes that are 45 minutes long with a 10-minute break between each. Between second and third classes, they have a 20-minute break for a whole… Continue

A Look Back at My China Experience

Anyone can fly to China and climb the Great Wall. Only a lucky few can journey to a remote village and walk hand-in-hand with the precious children who live there. Only a few can laugh and delight in doing the hokey pokey in a tiny village at the base of a mountain surrounded by happy young faces.

This journey opened my heart and my mind. The world IS a global village. There are things that my children and I can do to make the world a… Continue

Global Awareness, Collaboration, and Conversation

Posted on August 2, 2008 at 5:21pm 2 Comments

I had the privilege last month of traveling across the country to speak to teachers, administrators, and technology trainers. The "light bulb" of awareness for the need to empower teachers and student to collaborate globally is definitely shining brightly! Whether you are a second grade general education teacher or a high school foreign language teacher, our field of education gets it! In order to prepare our students to be competitive, analytical, and successful, we need to arm them with an… Continue

Hi Dr. Stubbs,

If you're interested to get a bit more online synchronously with your ePal students I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom. I also recommend you take a look at authorstream's power point presentation platform, it could prove useful if students want to put a power point on the web ePal memebers to view. Anyhow, both are web based, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

I have a question about ePals on the Empowered Desktop. Kan Ed shows the students advanced to the next class from last year and that I have 4th grade students. However, ePals hasn't advanced our students, so I did that manually though it doesn't list my 3rd graders as they were entered this school year. Any suggestions or do I need to manually enter those students into ePals?

Hey Kari:
I know I missed it. We had a false alarm that day. Spent the night before in the hospital thinking the baby was on her way only to get sent home. Still pregnant and waiting! Will be induced on the 23rd if she doesn't come before then!

Hi Kari!
Hey, our librarians are trying to set up ePals on the KanEd desktop, but the users are still in with last year's grades in KanEd. What should we do?
