Teacher centered tech vs student centered tech

My recent educational/philosophical leanings are toward a more student centered/student empowered classroom experience in the k12 environment where the teacher serves as a formal teacher of background knowledge but where students do the majority of the work, and therefore, do the majority of the learning.

Freire’s conscientizacao construct and ed tech can go hand in hand if ed tech is implemented in a student centered manner. In many schools technology purchases are usually teacher… Continue

Using Facebook with my students

As one of the trailblazers for using new technology at the college - (we prefer this phrase than guinea pig) ;) I started using Facebook to work with my students.

I wanted to get the students to upload the graphics they were designing to a facebook group to then allow the other students to see what wonderful creativity there was. This also allowed links to be shared, discussions to be used and also to invite ex-students now working in the industry in to the group and get them to… Continue

Using Voicethread for Peer and Self Assessment

This week I had my students use Voicethread to provide feedback on the latest round of their cigar box panels.
A little bit about how this worked - the students were put in groups (combined editing groups from across my two Humanities classes) and asked to provide specific and detailed feedback to their peers. I prepared this list of elements…

Weather and War Project

My students just finished their weather and war project. They worked in groups of three to create a visual presentation about how weather affects war. Each student had one of the following roles: mapmaker, weapons researcher, and weather reporter. I loved bringing in two guest speakers. The kids especially enjoyed learning about the Vietnam War. I allowed the students to choose how they presented their information. Some chose SmartNotebook and others chose PowerPoint. I was surprised that no… Continue

recycling dilemma

I am trying to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum. The major problem I am having is with recycling contractors. When the recycling market is down, They don't want our stuff. Like right now. So we are having to pay a fee to recycle. That's a bunch of hooey. I am ashamed to tell any of the teachers or students that we are having to pay to recycle because they would drop the program in a heartbeat. Anyone else going through the same situation?

St. Patrick's Day and Santa and the Leprechaun

Children like all families; here at Santa’s Village we also have our day to day problems.

Well one day Maurice the Mouse knocked on my office door. “Come in Maurice” I said, “What can I do for you?”

Maurice said, “Santa I was in the grotto the other day and I saw a group of little green men and when they saw me they… Continue

ABORTION DEBATE

The current `debate’

Conservative religious and political leaders are at it again, trying to restrict women’s access to abortion in this country.

Since its re-election in October 2004, the Coalition federal government, with right-wing Christian support, has steadily campaigned to make abortion a contentious issue. Health minister Tony Abbott is publicly campaigning for an end to Medicare rebates for terminations, and Christopher Pyne,… Continue

Edupunks United - Pedagogy rooted in punk philosophy

The word "edupunk" is a neologism. The aim of this group is to refine the word's meaning through constructive discourse and social science research methods. Invite more educators and punks to submit.

I have a new FB Group dedicated to understanding the links between education and punk philosophies. There is no hierarchy here. Everyone is an 'administrator' and 'officer' in this group. Feel free to join in.

Welcome to utopian social anarchy. Edupunks United… Continue
