Some thoughts on the virtual classroom

I've just recently started teaching on-line using the WizIQ website. Some of my chemistry students expressed an interest in spending some time outside of class preparing for the SAT II Chemistry subject test that is coming up in May. I thought it would be a great opportunity to try on-line teaching.

I've only taught a couple classes so far, but I've spent considerable hours researching and attending others' online classes at WizIQ.com. I've read several articles where people claim… Continue

Digital Native or Digital Immigrant?

Without a doubt, I am a digital immigrant. An infant digital immigrant, at that. I'm not afraid of technology, so I have that going for me, but every time I think I am becoming a toddler or maybe even a child, I find a whole new area I didn't even know exsisted. I liken it to a child who has had that first piece of candy. It is sweet and delicious and I can't imagine anything better, but then I find the candy section at a small convience store. Look at the choices! I can hardly wait to try… Continue

Reflections on readings in regards to project tomorrow

Students are so involved in the way they communicate with each other, the pop worlds text messaging and myspace. Students have so many ways and avenues to communicate.

Notes about Chapter 4

Tagging is all about using words to categorize and describe content. As a result of fact, a new term, folksonomy, was coined as a result of the practice of tagging in an online environment.(Braun) Tagging enables… Continue

Free Web Site Generators

I have been looking into various free web site generators and have not found one yet that I am overly satisfied with. I would like the site to have a lot of different capabilities such as being able to add sound files, esthetically pleasing and so on. If anyone know of a great web site generator please let me know. I don't mind if I have to spend a small annual fee, but I think it would be great to use with my students.

My TCEA Review

The theme for the 2009 TCEA convention in Austin was "Accelerate Technology," obviously a play on the racing industry. So it was off to the race track for me. As I made my way down the isles of the exhibit hall, it was less acceleration and more of the same — clickers and… Continue

Teaching in the Digital Age

Wow, this was some great information. The videos were very interesting and enlightening at the same time. I have not started my teaching career officially yet, but I have been substitute teaching at the Derrick Thomas Academy. The article that we read by David Warlick was very informational as well. I never thought about podcasts being used for teaching. It is obvious now to me that it can be very useful. The entire article will be useful for me in the future. It just amazes me the technology… Continue

Weblog 3

Well I thought I would make comments as I read the assignments.

Chapter 4: I have seen on some websites that I visit, people "tagging" their photos/content. When Braun takes the opinion this could help literacy, I thought it absurd (I still need a bit more convincing). I continued to read on and try to follow her examples and feel nothing but old. I visited the websites discussed for clarification and quickly realized . . . I need someone nearly half my age to explain. I continue to read… Continue

Teaching in the digital age!

I have learned that I am and immigrant. There is a whole world out there that I have not explored, but so far in this class I am seeing it for the first time. There is so much that teachers can use from other teachers. Using this site, I have found new friends and they have responded to a lot of my questions. I have created a Facebook account, join delicious, made a wiki, and much more. Teachers must learn this new technology if we want to teacher our students the tools they need for the new… Continue

First blog, first blog. This provides you with an overview of our Blue Schools project.

My Living Textbook

I woke up in the middle of the night last night thinking about my Living-Textbook. This is a website that contains hundreds (maybe dozens maybe thousands, I'm not sure) of questions that I developed related to newspaper articles. I haven't been keeping this up to date, but all of the sudden I thought of a really interesting quote that I just put up on the living textbook: "Yesterday's Current Events Questions are Today's Critical Thinking Questions. Great Essay Prompts!! Wonderful ways to… Continue
