I appreciate the welcome. I'm looking forward to using this site to share ideas. I teach English and history. I model several technology lessons at the school I teach and need to venture into sharing ideas with people with expertise beyond mine to enhance my teaching. I hope Classroom 2.0 does just that.

Thanks for saying hi. I had been meaning to look at this and had it bookmarked. I was at a conference this week and someone (Either @markwagner or @fitzwalsh) suggested it and I made sure to sign in.

Kim Cofimo's words of wisdom = "Teachers who use technology in the classroom are: flexible, willing to take risks and try new things, not afraid of failing, able to learn from their students, adaptable, and comfortable with the fact that they are not the smartest person in the room. Cultivating this kind of mindset is the first step to understanding how to use technology successfully in the classroom." What kind of teacher are you?

Lady Greenfield, professor of synaptic pharmacology at Lincoln college, Oxford, and director of the Royal Institution, "...told the House of Lords that children's experiences on social networking sites "are devoid of cohesive narrative and long-term significance. As a consequence, the mid-21st century mind might almost be infantilised, characterised by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity". [http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/feb/24/social-networking-site-cha...] Listen to the podcast to get the full impact of her point of view. What do you say?

Remembering

Comprehension

Posted on July 27, 2009 at 8:30am 0 Comments

I'm reading the following for a course I am taking,

schools need to be able to provide high-quality instruction in both word-level and comprehension skills in order to meet the diverse needs of students who continue to struggle with reading in late-elementary, middle, and high school

and it occurs to me that this statement appears perfectly okay. But is it? If literacy is communicating and comprehending using a medium, then isn't… Continue

Powerful Learning

Posted on July 21, 2009 at 9:35am 0 Comments

Which is more powerful, a service or a community? This idea came up during the last ETT Community Meeting. A service was defined as a fully funded entity like your landline or your local hospital or even your community college. A community was defined more like a bunch of people who contribute to each other's learning. A community is an entity with which you can engage, and by engaging, learn.

The difference is both a but murky but at the same… Continue

Network Challenge: Audiobook

Posted on May 31, 2009 at 3:00pm 0 Comments

A couple days ago I challenged people on Twitter and here I repeat my challenge. In these last days before summer, I challenge you to produce an audio book with students! Then disseminate!! There are numerous tutorials on how to do this and I won't repeat that here. Basically, all you need is something with which to record and students reading their original works. Why not have each student create a story? That project works in well with many content… Continue
