Ning Uses

Well, I'm starting to narrow down how I'll use this site. I was going to post pics and get really involved but I think I'll use my FaceBook account for pictures. I think I'll spend more of my time on this site networking for now and see where it takes me from there.

Getting Started

I am attempting to use more technology in the classroom by incorporating blogs and wikis into my curriculum. I teach high school social studies and have found many resources on the internet to aid in teaching U.S. History and Civics. I would love to create a wiki for my classes and have the students use these, but I haven't been trained in using them and I am still somewhat uncomfortable with how to use them. Are there any suggestions on what other teachers have done and how it worked? I would… Continue

Beginner

I have just started exploring the world of 2.0 and trying things out to see what they can do. I found out about this resource at a workshop. I can't wait to see what this world can do for me and my students.

Jeopardy PowerPoint Game

I just updated my website (and personal blog there) with an updated version of my Jeopardy PowerPoint game template. You can find it on my website at www.lynnembailey.com . Th new version is one file with sound embedded that contains both regular and double Jeopardy Q&A's and works with Office/PowerPoint 2003/XP and newer. The old version works with earlier versions.…

Bad economic news and its effect on education?

More bad economic news today - the dollar sinks with no real relief in sight.
I wonder how this will affect online for-profit schools? Will the number of instructors be cut as student enrollment goes down (IF it goes down), and will the pruning start with the more experienced and higher paid teachers?

The water's edge

Of all the online spaces and places I've found to play in, this one elicits the most interesting internal response. The Ning platform is really lovely. Signing in here feels like coming to the waters edge of a secret swimming hole. I know I can swim and that it will be wonderful to swim with so many others who appreciate this place, but I have not jumped in. Why?

Voicethread - Looking for classes willing to "surprise" my students.

Hi,

My 5th grades started using voicethread last week to practice their English. They have recorded themselves on the thread that can be seen on this page:http://iteachr.com/learn2gether.html

It would be a fantastic surprise for them (and extremely motivating) if they discovered the voices of other kids on the thread. Our next lesson is Sunday, if any of you have the time and the equipment, please consider letting your…

The beginning of my research

The following was written the beginning of September. We were asked to start coming up with ideas of what we wanted to do for our research, in my grad level class. Now I will be honest, I found it a bit wierd to do this, since it was a grade level course, but I am thankful that the research advisor had us do this.…

Embracing Change

As I have been preparing for Tuesday's Secondary Quarterly Meeting, I've been doing a lot of reading. I've attached an article by Mike Schmoker that I commend to you. Schmoker is a passionate advocate for effective teachers and effective teaching.

In his book, Results Now, he argues that in most schools and districts a "buffer" exists which works against innovation and improvement.

"…school culture and supervision tend to ignore or divert teachers from implementing and… Continue

Letter for online etiquette ?

Hi fellow educators !
Could anyone provide me with an example of a letter to parents for
blogging safely with students or at least the key ideas? I'd rather not
invent the wheel, and I may not know all the good points to make.
I want to protect them and myself as much as possible from any
ramifications. Thanks!
