Summary Week 6

There were no Tech Explorations this week.. which I must say, was a blessing! WebQuests are much more complicated than I originally thought, and the extra time was much appreciated. After doing much research and exploring in the WebQuest world, there was much to take in! Though they may look easy and like lots of fun for the students, there is a lot of time and attention to detail to making these quests.…

Authentic Learning Reflection

Learning-by-doing is generally considered the most effective way to learn. The Internet and a variety of emerging communication, visualization, and simulation technologies now make it possible to offer students authentic learning experiences ranging from experimentation to real-world problem solving.  Authentic learning typically focuses on real-world, complex problems and their solutions, using role-playing exercises, problem-based activities, case studies, and participation in virtual…

Conflict a Dirty Word?

Understanding conflict, power, and the dynamic results that occur when conflict takes place due to power or the perceived lack thereof is an important aspect that needs to be understood in order to improve functionality inside an organizational culture.  To understand conflict and learn to value it, a leader and those within the organization must understand what conflict is and the healthy response to conflict that is needed in order to produce positive results from this perceived negative…

Technology in the classroom

I have used Livescribe pen and pebble program to create lessons for the class and post it in the Moodle. This makes it easy for the students because they don't have to carry around paper handouts. I have also created instructional videos for the class which they can watch many times at their own pace. it is another tool for differentiated instruction.

Using Amazon whispercast to "Publish" to your school iPads

In our semi-humongous Michigan school district we've struggled with  content onto our iPads

One of our principals asked how he could get 32 copies of a the book "How to Create a Culture of Achievement in your school and classroom" onto his teacher's iPads.

He could have bought the book from ASCD  Press for $27.95.  but he  wanted to know how he could put the $18.95 Kindle book on the ipads instead.

The answer was Amazon…

Managing your iPads with Apple Configurator

For the past year and a half I have been using Apple configurator to manage our district's iPads.

Its far from a perfect product but does help teachers and admins manage lots of iPads (we have nearly a thousand of them)

Configurator lets us

  • Download an app to many iPads at the same time
  • Put links to web sites on the iPad desktop (these are called webclips)
  • Set policies for the iPads (these are called profiles)
  • Do…

Blended Learning Reflection

Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace.

What do you notice about the implementation procedures?

  • Based around centers
  • Require…

Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) Reflection

I have been fortunate enough to use and experiment with interactive whiteboards.  Specifically, I had a permanent SMART Board in my last classroom, and I currently have access to reserve the classroom/computer lab with a SMART Board.

From my experience, classrooms with ample space near the front of the room or the area where the SMART Board is located provide for the best student-interactions.  Moreover, spaces where projectors can be hung from the ceilings provide the least amount of…
