Amazing Opportunity with Moodle and OLPC

I recently emailed Steve Hargadon this message - but feel free to take full advantage of it.Brave passionate Primary/K-12 school teachers (like there is another sort) - this could be an avenue for you to make your mark.

'I hope your are well. I would like to bring to your attention a truly wonderful education concept – but like all seeds, needs water and care.

Introducing the Digital Arts Toolbar and the Teacher Tech Toolbar!

I recently created a toolbar for my Digital Arts students to access the various freeware and cloudware resources we use in class. I also included a directory of engaging educational games and activities. Though it's designed with my students in mind, I'd like to share it with the rest of the Classroom 2.0 community. Here's the link - http://digitalarts.ourtoolbar.com/…

Who were the Pioneers of the Internet?

It is 1980 and the web was not invented, but the Bulletin Board System (BBS) flourished. They served the same function of a website, email, file transfer, graphic all in text. Most were served by a single phone line and there was no communication among the BBS.

Nostalgic Asides

I remember the Sister BBS in Staten Island, NY had to close down because of a hacker.

I found a 300 baud modem a little slow and felt the need to upgrade soon. Ancient history.

Tyrants of Academe

I just finished Jeff Jarvis’s WWGD. An excellent, if not perfect, read that I highly recommend to colleagues in education. There are some things missing, however, with his chapter on education. He didn’t go far enough.

I am thinking specifically about the role that certain institutions play in the hording of research. For example, when you click… Continue

Passover Freedom

As you might know, tonight marks the beginning of the eight day Jewish holiday of Passover. Consider the meaning of freedom:

Traditionally, Jewish people remember the Exodus from Egypt during Passover. We are supposed to feel as if we ourselves were actually redeemed by God from Egyptian slavery. As such, we want to remember those individuals who continue to be enslaved, and highly disadvantaged, today. So, what does it mean to be free? (Teachers might consider asking their students… Continue

Teach Green. Get $200 bucks.

What would you do with $200 to teach green?

Do something different this year for Earth Day. How about coming up with a project that empowers and challenges your students to think green for longer than just one day?…

my interests in web 2.0 and classroom 2.0

I am a sociologist who studies third party political movements in American society. Due to the lack of resources suffered by these organizations, they have been excluded from the venues of conventional mass communications. However, with the introduction of the Internet, third parties have found a medium that is widely accessible, and decentralized, because there are no editorial gate-keeping devices preventing the publication of contents within the limitless spaces of virtualism, I am… Continue

Ocean Now

Ocean Now is a project led by Dr. Enric Sala to study and protect the last remaining places in the sea that are relatively untouched by humans. Enric wanted to design an expedition that readers all over the world - especially teachers and students - could follow every day.

We just launched a new website that is tracking Dr. Sala and a team of scientists over the next month as they explore the southern Line Islands in the South Pacific. Teachers and students can ask the crew… Continue

It is Never Too Late to Go Back to School

When many people consider returning to school, they often reflect on what their high school experience was like. They have unpleasant memories of hard wooden desks and strict teachers. Today's adult education system is much more improved. Going back to school is now becoming a very popular choice for adults. There are many reasons why older people are continuing their education. Some of these reasons include:

• Increase their chances of getting a promotion or pay raise

•… Continue

TEACHING TECHNIQUES- Make Learning Fun-Voice OVERS

Teaching Technique -Make Learning FUN using Technology

First let me say I have encountered many teachers who think

that teachers should NOT try to make learning fun, they believe that learning is and should be laborious. They believe you have to “burn the midnight oil” and you experience PAIN to learn. They say “NO PAIN NO GAIN”.

Let us agree to disagree. I made the Deans list in college and enjoyed every… Continue

Importing Audio CD audiobooks into iTunes

I'm not sure if anyone else has run into this but within schools we used to have students listen to books on tape, anyone remember those days? Of course in more recent years we've purchased many audio CD audiobooks to support our literacy departments. With our iPod Touches we've been exploring methods of moving that purchased content into our iTunes account for our students. Although we've not found it to be nearly as easy as moving purchased music...there is a site at aldoblog.com that has… Continue

Voicethread is amazing

I love voicethread.com! My students are using it to develop DBQ's for the AP World History exam, but I can't wait to see what they come up with.

mindmeister.com

I quickly checked this out (above). It is VERY interesting.

Trying to figure out the best tools for The Arts Academy. I really need advice...seems like we all like our wiki sites. But, I would like to develop a technology plan for the school. Rush Arts lends itself well to portfolios including student work. I wonder if anyone has been trying out any type of e-portfolio. I would be interested in talking to folks about this.

Using free Web 2.0 tools in education

A few friends and I have been working at a startup building a tool for very large conversations online. We've only recently introduced it to the world of education, and we are very excited at the possibilities. Students as young as eighth grade have found it easy enough to use. The importance of this type of technology is that it challenges students how to really think about what they want to say; that sounds simple, but the results are surprising.

It can be used when teachers want… Continue
