Getting Ideas

Ok, thanks for all of the help everyone. I am looking at everything you put out there for me and it is making a huge difference. The only thing is there is so much, I don't know where I really should start. If anyone has a suggestion on how or where to start, just drop me a note.

Thanks.

The Connected student

I ran across this video about the connected student, accessing their education through a variety of resources including scholarly research, blog searches, rss feeds, and elements of the open courseware movement. Really great intro to connectivism...

Teachers TV - From Good to Outstanding

Hi everyone, I’m working on behalf of Teachers TV to ask for teachers to give their advice and opinions to fellow teachers who are taking part in a new series of From Good to Outstanding. I thought the teachers on this site would find this relevant, so I hope this is OK to post here (I also posted this in the forum but then thought it warranted a blog post). The series started on 9th June 2009 and we would really like more teachers to get involved… Continue

Stereoscopics, Haptics, & 3D Virtual Worlds for Learning

In some of my earliest planning for Edusim back in 2007 I developed a "List" of developmental functions (the Nov. 2007 post with complete list is here). Engineering game

Students from Bath University are using a computer car-racing game to help them to learn the principles of engineering.

The computer simulation game 'Racing Academy' allows first-year engineering students to theoretically design aspects of a racing car, such as the tyres, gearbox and engine, before racing it against a computer-generated car.

The teaching tool has now been analysed by psychologists and engineers at the university to gauge how effective gaming can be as a… Continue

Textbooks going the way of the 8 track tape?

Interestingly enough mostly reported in foreign newspapers, Gov. Schwarzenegger of California is seriously thinking about doing away with textbooks in high schools in order to cut costs in the long run. Personally, I like this idea. Can you imagine all the trees we can save? However, not everyone is for the idea, there is thing called accessibility to content that has to be worked out.

Here is the story… Continue

zooming 'round

Today's been quite a full day. I'm learning a LOT from the online Web 2.0 class. The journey to get assignments done takes me through miles of exploring, and I'm often side-tracked with the incidental learning that's going on. I am certain that's part of the design (because we have to explore so many sites), and it makes the whole learning process that much richer.

My find for the day: Jessica Clark's Public Media 2.0: Dynamic, Engaged… Continue

info. that I have found so far

As I have been looking into the research, I am find common themes of course with the material. Here is what I have found so far.

Setting Objectives:

*be flexible with the goals, they can be changed

*students involved in goal setting

*general enough to provide that flexibility

*contracts with the students provide them some control (ownership)

*provide enough time

*provide a rubric so they know expectations

*18-21% gain for students that have this in… Continue

Demise of the Active Learning Blog Carnival

The June carnival includes some ideas about using Dr. Michael Wesch's approach to curriculum development in K-12.

I regret to inform everyone that the last edition of the Active Learning Blog Carnival has been posted. I began the carnival to promote Educational Blogging and there are so many blogs available today that that purpose no longer makes sense. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles over the years.

Teaching Technique-COACH-4teachers

Teaching Techniques-Coach

This will not work for everybody. But it worked for a dear friend of mine. Let us just call him Bob. Bob was the only Caucasian in an all Black school. He was also the only male.

He was 5’6” and weighed 130 pounds. He explained to me that the female teachers in the school were excellent teachers and they were demanding and hard on the students. He said they were ideal mother figures and ruled with an iron hand. He explained that he was reluctant to use… Continue
