Oh how the world has changed...

During my Master's course study at Drury University from 2001-2003, I wrote an essay about the influences of social media on image and self-esteem. At the time, I focused on music, movies and plays; however, there has been a huge shift in what is considered "social media". In 2010, we are faced with what was once unimaginable forms of communication and influence. Never did I think there would be internet network where I could find my friends from high school and catch up. Facebook has become a… Continue

First Impressions of PLN

So my first thought when Drew said PLN, was actually “PLU”. For you non-retail workers, this is simply the number associated with a piece of clothing or some item you would buy in a store. Now before you think “is she

that blonde?”- There is a method to my madness. PLU- It’s one number for a

piece of clothing. When that piece of clothing changes (be color, size, etc),

so does the PLU. Now, PLN- I feel is just like that.…

And I'm overwhelmed again...

As I was watching the presentation and videos, I couldn't help but think how cool PLNs are. Then I thought, "I should get one started!" And then I had the horrible overhwhelmed feeling that comes almost every day when my principal or TIS or lit coach tells us about 10 more things we are responsible for and 100 more plan times they are going to fill with meetings. One of the blogs I read regarding PLNs commented on how teachers can't help but do anything more than react to everything that is…

Online Keyboarding Instruction Tools

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for an online (preferably free) source to use in my high school computer class. We are in a temporary location and we don't want to purchase Mavis Beacon or another program. I found CustomTyping online (www.customtyping.com) for a reasonable price and am wondering if anyone has used it. Any feedback is appreciated.

First impressions about PLNs

When I first heard the term PLN, I was afraid this was going to be way over my knowledge base, but now I am feeling much more comfortable. Hopefully this will be a means of getting input from others without eating up a lot of time. I like being able to get connected with others who are coming from the same place.

Hosting "class" on Classroom 2.0

Today I'm beginning a class on social media. I've delivered this professional development workshop before, but always through traditional blogs and focused on them, calling the class 'Blogging 101'. Of the 30 or so teachers that have attended, only a couple have continued the use of their blogs, though all have been positive about the experience and felt it gave them a better understanding of what the web could provide them and their students.

Last semester, I changed the…

1st impressions of PLN

Honestly, I'm a little scared....I feel like I need to write something inteligent (and what I write may not be) and someone else will read it. We will see how it goes. I'm not a big fan of facebook and blogging as it is used in popular culture today...I feel it's a waste of time (for me). But I realize that the PLN is an entirely different use of these sites. So I guess I need to turn that frown upside down and find some kind of picture for my profile.....

THE ULTIMATE ONLINE CONTENT COMBO...

There are two new tools that content creators need to know about.

Why do they need to know about them? Because they are tools that people in media creation (Graphic Artists and Video Editors) are using every day in their own Industry Standard format. As a Graphic Artist will be familiar with Photoshop and a Video Editor will be familiar with Final Cut Pro or something like Premiere, these tools are making their way to the web. Although they may not be the exact tools, the functionality… Continue

Once you put it out on the net, you can't take it back!

I am currently in a class about digital literacy, and last night as I lay in bed, I couldn't stop thinking about what this. There is no erase button; there is no take-backs. Well...this scares the........well....it scares me period. I lay there thinking about why I was able to post to Facebook, but Twitter and Classroom 2.0 was scary, and I think I discovered my problem. On Facebook, it is only my friends and family, or at the very worst, old classmates that will see me-see my mistakes. Twitter… Continue

Success Prep Conferences - guiding freshmen into the future

This post was originally posted on The Freshman Transition Network.

"If only someone had told me that when I was a freshman!"

What a sad statement to hear coming from a high school senior. High school is all about choices. As educators we must take every opportunity to help students and parents make better informed choices early on in their high school careers.

I would like to a recommend a model for doing… Continue

I Have Been Thinking

I am now enrolled in a technology class at Johnson Bible College. In this class I have so far learned a lot of useful stuff. I have always enjoyed technology and things that are involved with technology. Since I have always loved technology this means that I love this class. During this class I have been questioning why I am really in the teaching program at JBC. I have been thinking that…

Smartboards in the Classroom

When you think of a classroom, one of the first things that pops in your head is a chalkboard. Nowadays, these are a pretty rare find. Most teachers now have smartboards or an activeboard that they use when they teach. A smartboard is an interactive board that works with computers to enhance the learning experience. Because I graduated in 2007 and am from a small county, smartsboards weren't all that common. So I…

First Impressions of PLNs

I have never heard of a PLN before today! When I started to read about them, I immediately thought, 'oh no, not another Moodle page or Blackboard posting!!!' ugh. I just finished my masters in educational technology, and I have about had it with posting things for the sake of posting as an assignment. (I guess that's what this is, but hopefully it will become more than that!!) Then of course comes the repsponse to others, which normally ends up being a waste of time.

After further…
