Today is my birthday. I'm 44. It means that i have spent 40 years of my life, around 16 000 days, into various schools, first as student, then as teacher. But I wasn't an ordinary student because i hated the walls of my schools, and i'm not an ordinary teacher because i continue to hate the walls of the schools... I'm teaching in a public middle school in South of France, Provence... I like it, i need to talk every day with my students. I teach… Continue

A New Bag Of Tricks

What a busy first week it has proven to be, but all the same its been highly enjoyable especially when trialing some new tools in my classes. So here they are....

www.classtools.net

What will be coming next?

Old dogs and new tricks, I remember Legos but not ones that moved on their own or with commands. After a two day training I am so excited about using them in my classroom. I called my mom and told her she shouldn't have ever stopped buying Legos for my brother, she said "I knew it was on the job training, but they just got too expensive." I had to realize quickly that she was right. Kits cost $250 each and they suggest to only have 2 students… Continue

Social Networks are a lot of work

The software is not that hard to use (especially ning - soo easy) so I thought it would not be too much work to put up one of my own. Turns out that getting that critical mass of users to keep the site going is a lot of work. We have had two false starts and finally our algebra teacher site looks like it is building some momentum. Who knew it would be this hard?

Elementary Tech Teachers SMARTBoard Tech Lessons?

Elementary Technology Teachers teach how-to.... and integrate technologies. We must spend time teaching how to use software and hardware so that students can apply tech skills in other areas. In our struggle of encouraging everyone to integrate SMARTBoards and other IWBs, I find that we do not have many of the tech How-To... lessons for the IWBs. SmartBoard and Promethean lessons for curriculum topics are springing up all over, but we still cannot ignore the basic technology knowledge needs.… Continue

Building a network of non-school tutor/mentor programs

This is a map of the Chicago region showing concentrations of poverty and locations of poorly performing schools (according to state information). Our aim is that people use these maps to focus attention, and resources, on neighborhoods where non-school volunteer- based tutoring, mentoring, arts and/or technology programs might help keep kids safe, model different careers and aspirations than might be modeled in a high poverty area, and help… Continue
