Model Schools Conference

I had the exciting opportunity to attend the Model Schools Conference held in Orlando, Florida (yes, DisneyWorld!) back in June. The conference was run by the International Center for Leadership in Education. After attending a wide variety of lectures over the 2 1/2 days I had three main takeaways in the areas of brain research, technology and the (near) future of education.

Back-To-School Tech Byte

I could give an excuse here about why I haven't been blogging, but the truth is I have never achieved blogging regularity and I especially wasn't motivated to do so during the summer. I continue to battle with the reality that I have nothing new to say - whenever I am inspired on a topic it seems that 5-10 people in the edublogosphere or Twitter have already discussed it and I rarely have a more original thought than theirs. I'm not sure what to do with that fact. I still plan to reflect here… Continue

Not just about the tool...

I started out my career as a middle school classroom teacher teaching computer literacy and language arts. Go figure. At the time I was asked to teach "what" a computer was, not really "how" to teach writing and literature using a computer. Being the rebel, I thought I would kill two birds with one stone by having student learn about main idea and supporting detail through learning how to use a word processor and a floppy disk. I did more… Continue

Web 2.0 for Teachers... Who has the time?

Today, my focus is on Web 2.0 and the many applications out there. In my last post I posted a blog about the many tools available.

I've got my twitter, a blog, a NING community,…

Welcome to Candyland.

There are so many free tools out there that help businesses, teachers, students and just about anyone embrace new technologies to doing things that were not possible even a few years ago. In my own experience, Web 2.0 tools is like being a kid in a candy store. Every day I find some new tool or widget that allows me to do something complex with a very simple tool.

A great… Continue

Second Draft

I've got a new focus to work with for my PD for next year: itunes sharing. Computers on the same network can share itunes playlists and I am considering sharing professional learning videos and podcasts. There are subscription sites like PD360.com but the act of creating our own podcasts could help with teacher reception and use.

Do anyone have an ipod? and Do you put professional materials on it?

Worldware and the New Personal Learning Environments

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:00 am

Gary Brown

Students are no longer anchored to one institution, but now obtain their education from a variety of sources. Clearly, they have a real need to transport their educational experiences, using Web 2.0 tools that have legs beyond a single campus. But current institution-specific ePortfolio programs fall short of this mark, and students’ future employers are seeking job candidates who know the Web 2.0 and worldware tools that…

YouTube annotations

YouTube have a beta tool - annotations. I'm sure more features will appear soon as YouTube have acquired Omnisio but this will have huge implications in any curriculum area where the creation of media is core. I teach music and I've been waiting for something like this for a long time!

I've done a trial of how a music track might be delivered in YouTube with an ongoing analysis. Currently it is not possible to include the… Continue

Grading Workplace Learners Gets an F

Posted by Dojo Learning: Adult learners in the workplace are accustomed to the the freedoms of adult life. Free will, independent thinking, and the ability to make choices are only a few of the joys of being cut loose from our constrained youth.

However, the straight jacket experiences of high school and adult control never leave us completely. We spend twelves years of our lives learning how to behave and perform for our teachers. Rebellion… Continue

(WSI) Website Investigation: An Introduction to Information Forensics.

Carl and I concluded our first run of (WSI) Website Investigation: An Introduction to Information Forensics. This is a fully facilitated Moodle based online class. We had a lot of fun and the participants were great. We also radically underestimated the amount of time the course would take. We figured 5 hours in one week. When we polled the class everyone reported taking far more time with each case study.

It doesn't surprise… Continue

Gauging your Workplace Learning through Natural Assessment

Posted by Dojo Learning: Assessment is the process of investigating a learner’s work for evidence of understanding and competence. Typically, we learn content and then we are assessed through a test at the end of the process. But that’s not natural, assessment happens throughout the process of learning.

Let’s take the case of self-assessment. When we teach ourselves a skill or new knowledge we are constantly asking ourselves “did I get that?”… Continue

Supporting Next-Gen Academic Development in a Web 2.0 World

Supporting Next-Gen Academic Development in a Web 2.0 World

This presentation was by two people from UT Austin—Robert Bruce and Susanna Herndon. While there was a great deal of information about the processes that their office used to discover, test, and then disseminate new technologies that might be effective in the classroom, what struck me more was the organizational connections that were made to link what are key elements.

Essentially, UT Austin has… Continue

Campus Technology Innovator Awards Presentations

Campus Technology Innovator Awards Presentations

Normally, I am not a he fan of these award presentations. I understand that they can serve as an important spur to other campuses to try new things, but I usually know nothing about the recipients, and, as in this case, they give out 14 awards in an hour session…so how much can you actually gain from listening.

I was therefore pleasantly surprised by the concise, yet very clear presentations. While I am not… Continue
