Ideas in using Edublogs with Students

I have been maintaining a blog for communication purposes for about three years. I am now looking to incorporate more into my teaching and interaction with students. Our computer access at school is limited however. Does anyone have any creative suggestions for ways to incorporate blog use?

Locating colleagues by location

Yes, I get that this is web based and therefore we can chat with colleagues all over the world, but sometimes, face to face collaboration...the personal touch is vital. How can we find members by location as well as interest?

Net Geners set to topple our comfortable school-centered world in order to LEARN!

In Grown Up Digital, Tapscott notes: "Net Geners possess a tool of unprecedented power and are driving changes that could topple many established orders . . .People no longer have to follow the leaders and do what they're told. Now they can organize themselves, publish themselves, inform themselves, and share with ther friends-- without waiting for an authority to instruct them."

Isn't that great!? I hope you will imagine with me what that means for learning! It's a… Continue

After Holiday Let-Down

So, now that the holidays are over, it's time to get "back to reality". I will be finishing up my first Science Fair in the next month. This has been an experience I have enjoyed however, it has become rather bothersom at the same time. It is at times difficult to motivate the students. In my class (7th and 8th graders) we have been working on Science Fair since before Thanksgiving. They have had ample opportunity to complete all of their research, type all of their papers, etc. in class. I… Continue

By Lance Winslow

Many people spend hours watching and learning on Television. What a great teaching tool it can be. Maybe in the future we can use this platform with the technology upgrades along the way to help propel our teaching endeavors.

Currentely, there is the Discovery Channel, Science Channel, History Channel, Wings, Animal Channel and a host of others and they are indeed very interesting to watch.… Continue

21st Century Literacies and Schools of Education

This is a topic that has been on my mind for several years but after spending some time with a new teacher over the Christmas break has pushed me to the point that I need to put my thoughts somewhere even if no one reads it.

What are universities doing to make sure that their teacher candidates are prepared to use and teach their students to use technology? Apparently not much. Case in point: my nephew's wife has been teaching in California under a provisional/temporary teaching… Continue

School Reform and the IBM Selectric

During a recent evening of channel surfing, I stumbled across a great show on the History Channel dealing with the development of the typewriter. I knew some about the history of the typewriter, including the fact that they key placement was designed to slow the typist down so that they machine could keep up and that key jams would be lessened.

The IBM Selectric was a revolution. No more jammed keys! Instead, IBM thought of a new way to make the typewriter work better -- put the… Continue
