If they aren’t learning..Then you aren’t teaching
I didn’t always believe the concept that is inferred in the title of this article. I once thought that I was one super extraordinary teacher, the fact that 75% of my students had “F’s” was not important. My thought was that if they got bad grades it was because they wanted bad grades. (I sure made it easy enough by giving excellent explanations and commentary on the lessons.) I did all I was supposed to do and…

Paradigm- the key to successful teaching
What is it? By definition “an example serving as a model; pattern”
Every teacher has one; but most teachers don’t realize what their paradigm is.
Your paradigm determines how well you do every little teaching task that you do.
But first let me give you some examples.
Here are some examples of teacher paradigms.
“My job is to present the lesson. It’s up to the student to learn the…

Teaching Technique-Make students like your classThe question you obvious have is, HOW?
Consider this, if you went bowling for the first time and threw gutter balls every time. After it was over, you would probably say, “I don’t like bowling!”
If you played golf for the first time and couldn’t even hit the ball. You just hit dirt and missed the ball every time, you would probably say, “Golf is not right for me!”
If you went to archery range for the first time and hit the…

A TEACHING TECHNIQUE- US vs. THEM
It exists everywhere between many different groups, sometimes it exists on the conscious level, sometimes sub-consciously. Consider these groups, tall people vs. short people, bald people vs. people with long hair, Blondes vs. brunettes, and TEACHERS vs. STUDENTS.
Imagine this diverseness as an actual physical gap.
Here is the concept
The larger the gap the…

TEACHING TECHNIQUE-THE TEAM
The concept of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy taught me, “What you say is what you get”.
Here is the TEAM technique. First, start calling the groups of students you teach classes and call them teams. That is your first period class is a team, the second period a team etc.) You may choose to call them Learning Teams. Let each team choose a motto, a hand shake, a hand sign, a team song, you get the idea.
What makes a team? A common goal, of course.…

In case you are too young to know, Cecil B. Demille was a Legendary Movie director who is known for the most exciting productions in movies. (This was before CGI, special computer effects).
This technique works best if you have a digital camera or a video camera. (You can now buy one that’s adequate for under $100.00). However, that is not a requirement.
My ninth grade Biology, and Science Classes put on Presentations.…

A TEACHING TECHNIQUE—ATTITUDE
The first day in my class this is what I said to my students.
You are very lucky. Just by luck you have landed in the classroom of the best teacher in the school! I am so smart that intelligence is all over my body. As I walk around the classroom some of that intelligence will break off, float in the air and land on YOU.
It is impossible for you to sit in my classroom…

TEACHING TECHNIQUE 35 – THE VISITOR
All the techniques will not work for all classes. But some are really worth trying. This one really worked for me. I think it worked because it made the students realize
I REALLY CARED
Here it is. I informed my students that I was taking classes every night (and in the summer) working on my doctorate degree. I explained to them that had I spoken positively about them in each of my classes because I was really proud of them. I told…

As a golfer I frequency hear that if you don't play and don't practice the skills that you have built up will begin to disappear. Living in the frozen north where our winters tend to deposit a lot on snow on golf courses making play or practice an impracticality, I can vouch for the premise to some extent. My 2 handicap does not carry over well from Novemeber to April but by the time it hits 5 or 6 in June I'm playing better and the handicap is helpful in those friendly wages that are a part of…

The first technology I remember really enjoying was a giga pet. For some reason I thought those we just the coolest things. You know, you would bring home a dog or cat and have to feed it and love it and bathe it. It would make noises every time it wanted something. When you first brought it home, it was a baby and would need you to take care of it all the time. It would constantly beep until it got "old enough" to not need attention all the time. I distinctly remember resetting it one night.…

The wiki's went better today. Started the class out with a group brainstorm:
what do we know about handwriting analysis?
Why is it important in forensics?
Who are the people that do handwriting analysis?
Can we find some case studies where handwriting analysis helped to solve crimes?
We then delegated who wanted to post to the wiki about which topic. As they posted I checked each page and gave feedback about each student's wiki post (check spelling, put this…

This is the first blog I have entered..trying to be more active here.
I really want to start using wikis in some or all of my classes. I took the first step right before christmas and had some students create a meteorology wiki for a final project. There wasn't as much original thought as I had hoped for, but all in all it turned out okay.
Last week, I created a wiki for my forensics class to unite everything we do in there. I think this could be a great resource for…

I've loaded this app and it's just as clean and easy as it says. I would definitely change a few things. 1) make it easier to load multiple images at one time instead of having to go back into your library after each image. 2)As stated, make viewing flickr from the app. Overall, great find and very simple straight forward.…

Today during my senior Outdoor & Environmental Studies class we begun looking at the different motivations or reasons people choose to participate within outdoor experiences in natural environments. This part of the course is usually quite exciting as it lets the students share their own experiences. Anyway I’ve been looking for a genuine reason to utilise a Blue tooth server within the classroom and today was always going to be a great opportunity, here’s how it happened
I…
