Today's been quite a full day. I'm learning a LOT from the online Web 2.0 class. The journey to get assignments done takes me through miles of exploring, and I'm often side-tracked with the incidental learning that's going on. I am certain that's part of the design (because we have to explore so many sites), and it makes the whole learning process that much richer.

Fundamental elements of many dropout prevention programs include social-skills training, problem-solving skills training, and social-cognitive skills training provided within the school setting. According to a report from the National Center on Secondary Education and Transition, the majority of successful interventions include a personal and affective focus: enhancing self-esteem, individual counseling,… Continue

On Wednesday night (9 p.m. eastern time), I will be guest-hosting this week’s edition of Teachers Teaching Teachers as we continue to explore the book I co-edited — Teaching the New Writing. This week, we’re going to focus in on the theme of collaboration with some of the chapter writers. It should be an interesting talk about how technology… Continue

As I have been looking into the research, I am find common themes of course with the material. Here is what I have found so far.
Setting Objectives:
*be flexible with the goals, they can be changed
*students involved in goal setting
*general enough to provide that flexibility
*contracts with the students provide them some control (ownership)
*provide enough time
*provide a rubric so they know expectations
*18-21% gain for students that have this in… Continue

The June carnival includes some ideas about using Dr. Michael Wesch's approach to curriculum development in K-12.
I regret to inform everyone that the last edition of the Active Learning Blog Carnival has been posted. I began the carnival to promote Educational Blogging and there are so many blogs available today that that purpose no longer makes sense. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles over the years.
This will not work for everybody. But it worked for a dear friend of mine. Let us just call him Bob. Bob was the only Caucasian in an all Black school. He was also the only male.
He was 5’6” and weighed 130 pounds. He explained to me that the female teachers in the school were excellent teachers and they were demanding and hard on the students. He said they were ideal mother figures and ruled with an iron hand. He explained that he was reluctant to use… Continue

Investigating VW alternatives to Second Life, for educational applications
Last week, I focused on education related uses of the premier Virtual World application - Second Life. This week I am looking into other Virtual World environments that are being used for education and instructional applications.
I am currently looking into setting objectives and providing feedback. Setting objectives is pretty old hat for me but providing meaningful feedback is an area that I purpose could grow in. If anyone has some ideas or websites that they could share on this topic, that would be great.
Thanks,
Julie

Do we even call it a classroom? Maybe we call it an environment?
Here are suggestions - but they are speculative suggestions only.
1. Flexible
The traditional schoolroom was a place that was designed for all to follow the same thing at the same time and the technology that was in use was so specific as to be easily accommodated within a static set up. Now we need the utmost flexibility. Flexibility on terms of desking, or power, of ICT connectivity, of computers… Continue

The village school at that time provided all the instruction we were likely to ask for. It was a small stone barn divided by a wooden partition into two rooms - The Infants and The Big Ones. There was one dame teacher, and perhaps a young girl assistant. Every child in the valley crowding there, remained till he was fourteen years old, then was presented to the working field or factory, with nothing in his head more burdensome than a few mnemonics, a jumbled list of wars, and a dreamy image…Continue

Standards and underachievement have been at the forefront of recent educational debate. I would like to introduce, for those interested, a specially designed rolling curriculum designed to address standards, attitudes and motivation in students 5-12 and continuously support learning in core subject areas throughout the primary/ elementary years.

I put over 130 miles on my minivan in ONE day this week just chauffeuring my two kids to ball games, practices, and "Driver's Ed" class. This time of year can be crazy, but I absolutely LOVE every minute of it!
Anyway, before the summer flies by, as it has a tendency to do each year, I'm writing down some goals to keep me focused.
Professional Goals:
1. Prepare for and lead session (Collaboration and Building a PLN) for… Continue

Here are some of the signs that you love using technology in the classroom:
1. During a 2.5 hour dentist appointment, you spend 2 hours thinking about student collaboration projects with Google Docs.
2. At an In The Flesh Concert (local Pink Floyd cover band), you wonder how people are "connected" (like the facebook graphic)
3. You have accounts for Thinkfree, Zoho, and Google Docs, you login weekly to check for updates.
4. Each year you use different presentation… Continue
