I've had the students create their blogs on the schools intranet
worpressMU installation. So far I've got 25 of 60 blogs set up. Their were/are some minor problems, but I will get them all a blog eventually.
I had student reactions ranging from this is very cool ... all the way to you can't make us do this. It is math class and some of them are excited about reading and blogging and some not so much.
My blog about the book I'm reading:…

I normally like to post with ways to help others or something positive, but today is something that is very disturbing and sad. A teacher that I knew at a high school that I taught at for three years was stabbed and killed by a student this week. It's really sad and aggravating, as this teacher was trying to make a difference in this world. He had mentioned to his family members that he felt that he had found his calling in life. Todd Henry was a great person and an awesome musician. I would…

Online test brings a lot of benefits to assessment: time-saving, flexibility and economical. For test-takers, they can take the online test at their own preferred time - great flexibility. For trainers/teachers, it spares the time to mark the test because the test is graded automatically - big time-saving. For organizations, it saves a lot of cost to employ instructor designers and print millions of test papers - more economical.

I work with students in a very rural setting of Pennsylvania. I am looking to build some connections with other classes around the world to foster a bigger world view for my students. I have lots of cool ideas of how we could collaborate, if you are interested, drop me a message.

As some of you may be aware I have been teaching a maths unit this semester, which although is out of my usual subject area of Phys Ed, Is probably shaping up to be one of my favourite classes. The unit is called ‘Space and Measurement’ and basically focuses on teaching perimeter, area and volume with a really strong emphasis on making the lessons hands on. With that last point in mind Ive tried to steer clear of the traditional approach to teaching maths and have moved towards running…

In an earlier post I talked about the power of learning from the “Thing Itself”. The classroom environment is usually a permanent place inside a building where outside excursions require more money and resources than available to most teachers. Since time travel isn’t possible, just yet, there is a program available that is the next best thing. This program provides a way for students to experience the “Thing Itself” without leaving the classroom.
I am referring to the Library of…

It‘s almost comical how long it has taken me to become a contributor to the online community. To the online community I would be referred to as a lurker. The word “lurker” sounds evil but in reality a lurker is someone who reads and observes social networks but rarely contributes. I compare it to the student in the back of the classroom that never participates in the discussions but knows the content as well or better than those students participating. Apparently, I haven’t been alone but times…

Here's a quote from a major new study about merit pay:
Overall, our results consistently indicate that the increased focus on individual teacher performance caused a sizable and statistically significant decline in student achievement.
Read it again. It's a bold accusation.

These free sites provide students an opportunity to learn in a fun, interactive environment.
I searched out and visited a bunch of sites with free educational games and selected the ten I thought were most useful and appropriate to education. In addition to a brief overview of each site, I have also attempted to define the grade range that each site is applicable to. I made my own judgement for most sites since it often wasn’t indicated (feel free to weigh in if you think I’m…

Today I took delivery of a
Bluetooth Rocketfish Wireless Laser Mouse! It connected to my Macbook with no problem at all and looks great. It has a range of about 30 feet, like most Bluetooth mice, and should be a useful tool for my classroom. No longer will I need to stand next to the LCD projector with my laptop. I can wander the room, or stand out the way of the screen. Best…
