Effects of blogging, wikis, and social networking on education

I am trying to gather a list of resources, especially those based on research, which support the use of blogs, wikis, and social networking and it's positive effects on education. I am trying both build a case for the use of these tools, as well as provide a thoughtful and reasoned approach to safety issues, content management, and some effective safeguards and bets practices surrounding their use. Any help would be appreciated.…

The Branding of a School by Lance Winslow

When it comes to education and parent piece of mind image may mean more than you think. Having happy and satisfied parents sure beats having obstinate and hostile ones. Anyone who has been involved in education for any long period of time knows very well how important it is to have the children and parents onboard with the school and staff.

This is where a little bit of solid branding will go a long way to helping build the… Continue

Asimov's 'The Fun They Had' - How much longer and how do we avoid the pitfalls?

I remember reading The Fun They Had in the 6th grade and thinking how fantastic and unreal it seemed. Having just re-read it (do it; it'll take you less than 3 minutes) I'd say Asimov was right on the money, what with all the talk of singularity and this Web 2.0 stuff. But he was off a hundred and fifty years or so in just how long it would take for computers to… Continue

My Learning Life

Here’s the plan I want to create for my kids. I want to develop a framework that supports them as learners online. It is a living resource and evidence reference about ‘how I like to learn’. This is always a work in progress, and is created, edited and used by them, teachers and us.

Will it have a long tail? Absolutely. In the case of Mr7 it begins as a support – to help him and his teacher negotiate how he sees learning. We are I guess lucky in that we are able to ‘talk teacher’ and… Continue

Classroom 2.0

Im excited about joining my first official social network, classroom 2.0. There is so much information here it will take awhile to figure it all out:) There is so much you can find just reading posts!!

I haven't decided if Im going to blog regularly here since I have a classroom blog, tidertechie.edublogs.org. I am trying to limit the incorporation of 2.0 elements to a manageable load:)

Preferred Student Communication Tools

I've discovered this information first hand when I first turned on text messaging on my kid's cell phones. My son, a freshman in high school, managed to rack up 3,500 text messages in one month, and that's having been grounded from his phone for two weeks that month. My daughter is much better, she still calls us, old timers, but chooses to text her friends in college.

Only 12% of students currently check email on their mobile, but eROI…

Ning Launch and 21st Century Literacy Lesson

Last week, I launched the ISA Internship Ning—a community for my students (12th graders at The International School of Americas) to share their career-exploration internship experiences with one another. Widgets

I'm just playing with a site for making widgets. I think it's pretty interesting, but last night when I went to bed I dreamed about it, imagining that I had made a widget that was actually a mini twist-a-plot book, and you clicked and made decisions all the way through, and I had conditional programming in it. Conditional programming. I haven't thought of that in years.

So, I'm wondering what my kids could do with it. We could maybe make widgets of their work in science, and… Continue

Disrupting Textbooks: cK12 and Flat World Knowledge

In Nyack NY, north of NYC, a seed is forming. Flat World Knowledge, a company bent on disrupting the textbook business, is getting ready to move into a private beta next spring with 10 textbooks in business and economics. Jeff Shelstad, CEO, and Eric Frank, CMO, left regular textbook publishing where, as of late, publishers are fighting to keep their head above water by jacking up prices and skewing the revision process. After hooking up with David Wiley and Brad Felix, the group decided to… Continue
