This is an example that students could do pretty easily that would give them immediate feedback on how successfully (or not) gave and followed oral directions: listening and speaking. Taking a bite would have been a nice conclusion. Showing mistakes would be fun too, like setting the jar of peanut butter on the bread.

Hello Judy, I was reading your introduction.  I too decided to teach after my 2 daughters graduated from high school.  So this is my 5th (coming up) year teaching.  I like your enthusiasm about teaching.  You know when I'm at work with the students, I love it but it's when I have to go to meetings and sit at boring professional developments is when I feel a little overwhelmed.  What is your view on the discussion question:  How are students different because of Digital Media?  This new technology is new to me. I see that you personalized your page. It looks nice. I have a document camera in the classroom and I still haven't begun to use it.  I need to find a place for it so that I can hook it up to the internet.  We have a Reading unit on transportation and I wanted to show the students the recent Endeavor's trip to space.  In this way, I feel that teachers can do a variety of  "out of the box" activities that will show students examples of different ideas and concepts.  They could not picture how astronauts travel to space and were very curious.  However, I did not follow through with the activity.  I don't know if it was my reluctance to venture into a new form of teaching or that I am not confident enough about technological tools.  I read James's view on students and the new digital media and he gives some very good points about how there are some good uses anf bad uses.  I have to agree with him on that and I know that by just listenig to the news (Weiner case),  we see just how bad digital media can be.  I can also see the great things (like the videos we saw in class) that students are doing when they are left to be cretive.  I will give my students more technology friendly lesson to toy with this next year.  I feel we have to get them ready even though they are still at the early elementary grades.  Let me know how you feel.  Thanks Cathy

Hey Judy, I just wanted to respond to your comment on Mrs. von Toll's discussion question. I have always wondered what the world would be like without simple tools such as the one you mentioned...the calculator!! I remember when I was in middle school, during a math test, my calculator went out and I totally bombed the test. That made me realize that I have to learn to NOT rely on technology, so that was a good lesson for me.
