Classroom Adventures with Audacity

By Alix E. Peshette

In last few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure to spend time working with 5thand 6th grade teachers and students in their school computer lab. This school is in the first year of an EETT grant (Enhancing…

Meeting our Changing World

Around here we keep wondering why it is taking so long for all the teachers out there to begin to utilize technology in their teaching repertoire. Why don't they take advantage of the great teaching and learning opportunities that cutting edge technology makes available to them? Why don't they make the effort to enter the 21st Century,…

Too small for web20

A few years back after being slim all my life, I gained weight rapidly, and in the space of a year went from being average to outsize. Buying clothes became torture, In fact after trying on outfit after outfit I generally went home with the first thing I tried on in my bag, or worse still, hot, flustered and depressed, without making a purchase at all.

While I love the possibilities opened up by Web20, I feel like that outsize me on one of those doomed to fail shopping…

thoughts on a Saturday morning

I can see the benefits of blogging, of course, but as noted in other posts, I just prefer to have interactions with either creating or responding to posts. That being said, today I find myself with a need to talk out loud to any/every/no one.

We're nearing the end of the inaugural year of the face 2 face portion of our charter school. I'm in charge of the direction of this branch (we also have a virtual school--I'm actually inbetween working out and showering up to do some in-home… Continue

How Technology is Transforming the Classroom at North Shore

On Thursday morning, Tom Doar, our Head of School, wandered into the library where I was getting ready to help work with our fifth graders on their iMovie project which I wrote about last week. He told me:

On Tuesday evening, at a meeting of the strategic plan committee chairs, Pam Whalley, our Lower School Head stated that the accessibility to technology has changed the way that teaching and learning are done in the classroom, especially in the last three years. Teachers…

Cryptic Commentary: moving forward, finding the locality

During this phase of learning the new forms of communication and connection with Web 2.0, I find myself expanding and contracting, expanding and contracting. To what degree is it good to reach out? To what degree is it important to stay local?

How large should the web be? Who gets to paint the web? Through what eyes is the web seen? Is it the size of a garden-spider's web, an ocean fisherman's net, a constellation of stars? I can't get the proportions right. They keep… Continue

Why are we doing this?

Today I had an interesting conversation today about using technology in the classroom and in the school and in the school division. Now, I’m very interested in moving the use of technology along beyond just a

minor few looking at some technology use in classrooms. I would like to

have it front and center in our division where we are looking at how to

build the skills of the teachers and create learning opportunities for

teachers and students. Right now, it is no more than…

Planning for Leadership

"Well that went off without a hitch" commented one of the parents today as we were finishing our first attempt at an afternoon with community and students being together. "Community Day" was a great success as 50 community members joined 100 of our students for an afternoon of games, activities and cookie decorating followed by a talent show with many of our student showing off their many talents. It was a great afternoon, to be sure, but it was so great because the group of teachers organizing… Continue

Vannevar Bush's Vision

In 1945 Vannevar Bush, an inventor and engineer, coined term 'trails' in his seminal essay entitled 'As We May Think'. Mr. Bush conceived of a product he called the Memex, which would enable a user to create a trail of linked and annotated pages. The idea was to annotate pages while you research a topic. Each note would be linked to the next note in the trail. Trails would be used to share your knowledge, the result of your research and with a dash of your insight.

I co-founded a… Continue

I teach in the 20th century

Living in a small town certainly has its advantages. But one of the disadvantages of this small town is that it is still in the 20th century. Our garden walls are so high, nothing can get in. (Can anyone help me remember where the garden wall illustration came from?) Ning came across my readings while at home, and I would love for it to become a part of my professional development during school hours. But I teach in the 20th century.

Contiguous islands of social networking

Here I am joining yet another community of web 2.0 proponents. It's like leaving those "loosely connected pieces" or a "subject scent trail" through the web. But enough gripes about the lack of integration.

I do considerable work here at the university and within the secondary school system advocating for the use of social software in the teaching and learning process. Of late I've been pushing the use of Elgg - a.k.a Eduspaces - and have developed a variety of Elgg based social…

My interview with Doug Johnson : )

I had the pleasure of speaking with author, blogger and thinker Doug Johnson this morning, it should be on the blog by tomorrow. He is a funny and sharp guy and we discussed online behavior and the changes that have come to educators and network administrators among other things. I recommend taking a look at his Blue Skunk blog: http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com/ to find out more about Doug. If you have a point of view that you would like to share on Driving Questions, shoot me an email:… Continue

New School - No Playground - Less Bullying?

Just found this on my del.icio.us subscriptions page.

Technology Trickle

I was thinking about how technology moves about in the field of education today. I realized that this aspect or our profession is constantly developing. As generations move up in age and level of education, they take with them the "old" technology. However, the newest technologies are not being experienced by our youngest students. They are experienced first by our university students it is from there that the technology trickles downward until it reaches primary and secondary schools. Doesn't… Continue

Changing tires while driving?

For some time the battle cry in education has been "We need to use technology in schools!” This is to me a laudable argument because it seems only common sense that kids will need to master the use of emerging hardware and software to be successful in ever-changing future. The problem arises when we think that just having new tools within close proximity to learners will somehow prepare them through some kind of educational osmosis. The other approach we have used is to teach the tool, i.e.… Continue

A Spark Plug

Yesterday evening, I began facilitating a six-week online class for EDC called Learning & Teaching with the Read/Write Web. I was excited to begin the course, but I was also inspired by how much each participant contributed in terms of ideas and projects they planned or have implemented using various Web 2.0 tools.

In a way, it gave me renewed energy to continue doing what I do. I have questioned on occasion why I do so much professional…

Reading suggestions

I'm reading Wikinomics by Don Tapscott right now. It's about the new trend of mass collaboration and is really a great read. It's creating all kinds of ideastorms in my brain.

What other Web 2.0-related books have you all read lately that you'd recommend?
