The Next Generation ePortfolio: Trent Batson, Helen Barrett, John Ittelson

(Brief note: I am not going to blog every session. The one I attended before this one was not very interesting, was disorganized, and, I thought, a bit simplistic. So, the next cool one was "The Next Generation ePortfolio" and that is what I'll be summarizing here.)

This was a panel presentation, with each of the speakers mentioned above getting a little less than a 1/3 of the time. There was a respondent, Eddie Maloney, but he was left so little time at the end of the hour… Continue

Day 2 Keynote: "A New American University for Next-Gen Learners" Adrian Sannier, UTO of ASU

(The whole presentation was recorded for streaming and should be available soon. I would recommend everyone see it when ready, I'll put the link in when I get it. My summary is below.)

For those who have attended conferences in the past, it is customary (and hoped for) that the opening Keynote address should excite the audience, be energetic, perhaps be controversial. If this is the case, then the Keynote address this morning was a huge success. The presenter has been the University… Continue

Pre Conference Workshop: The MIT iCampus initiative...

Well, I made it to Boston, checked in, and spent a very interesting afternoon at MIT. Before I go into details about the iCampus initiative, however, I do want to take care of some "housekeeping". I had mentioned in my initial e-mail to you that I would be attaching the .pdf of the conference brochure to my first blog post. However, it seems that I am no able to attach files to blog posts (learn something every day, I guess). I will post the brochure off the main page...probably as a… Continue

Are WE Social Enough?

As a member of the WeAreTeachers marketing team, I like to follow blogs that provide insight into market strategies, brand and community engagement activities. Interestingly enough, I came upon a audio post by Jeremiah Owyang, a well respected leader in online marketing, blogging and social media. In his latest report with… Continue

Opensim virtual world viewer project - "The Opensim KidWorld Viewer" for kid based (G-rated) Opensim worlds

GreenbushGrid

I am going to need to tweak the SL viewer a bit more for our GreenbushGrid Opensim Project (We have just wrapped up our 5th pilot group test) to remove all irrelevant and un-necessary menu items. Especially many of the floating pie menus (related to clothing & edit functions). Ill post screenshots & links of the "Opensim KidWorld Viewer" as the Mac… Continue

NY Times Article: Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading?

Thanks to the people at the International Reading Association and their "Reading Today Daily" RSS feed, I stumbled upon THIS article from the New York Times. Basically, the article compares reading online to reading print materials and asks if reading online is really "reading". The article hit a nerve with me as I recalled comments made on my blog… Continue

Trying to keep up!

How do you best stay afloat in a sea of new widgets, gadgets, nings, blogs, wiki's, podcasts, gcasts, photocasts, and the list continues? When I finished my PhD in Special Education - Ed. Tech emphasis, I was feeling quite confident that I would never be one of those who fell behind. I took a great deal of pride in my abilities to keep "in the know". Those days are long gone!

Rather than feeling like a relic I'm doing the best that I can to keep up with what seems an ever quickening… Continue

Global Awareness, Collaboration, and Conversation

I had the privilege last month of traveling across the country to speak to teachers, administrators, and technology trainers. The "light bulb" of awareness for the need to empower teachers and student to collaborate globally is definitely shining brightly! Whether you are a second grade general education teacher or a high school foreign language teacher, our field of education gets it! In order to prepare our students to be competitive, analytical, and successful, we need to arm them with an… Continue

Puppy Love

I am in love...

with my new lavendar Mead 5 Star Flex binder.

I just bought it today. Don't you just love this time of year with the EXPANDED school suppy sections? I go every so SLOWLY through those long, beautiful aisles, and, today, I saw it! There it was, a pretty lavendar colored "flexible" binder. To borrow words from Lily (as in purple-plastic-purse-Lily), all I could say was "Wow." It was love at first sight.…

ISTE Technology Standards for Students - Creativity and Innovation

Woke up early this morning and started some curriculum work on my Web 2.0 technologies class. After spending some time looking at the ISTE NETS*S, I thought I'd jot down a few ideas for what "Creativity and Innovation 1. a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products or processes" might look like if taught/explored more in the classroom. Here is my resulting brainstorm session. Ideally, I'd like to do this for all the NETS*S, but even better yet, would be to get some collaboration… Continue

WISDOM OF THE BIRDS

Once upon a time there was a golden songbird that lived in a beautiful garden. It spent all its days singing the loveliest songs to the honour of its maker and the delight of all the people who heard it.

But the keeper of the garden, who was a foolish and greedy man, coveted the little songster, and one day he made a cunning net in which he snared it. The little bird begged the man to release him and promised to tell him three great secrets if only he would let him go. Now the… Continue

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;

If you can think -- and not make… Continue

RESISTANCE.

Abraham-Hicks said:

"We want to make 3 powerful statements to you, and

if these are the only 3 things you ever hear, they

will be enough.

Number One:

The ONLY problem,

the ONLY thing that causes you any trouble,

the ONLY thing that slows you down,

the ONLY thing that keeps you from what you want,

the ONLY thing that makes you sick

is RESISTANCE.

Number Two:

INVESTING IN CHILDREN

I realize that most of what we called irresponsible parents are poor families. Poor not only in material things but in education and formation. The result of this are Children in Conflict with the Law, Street children, out of school youth etc. These group of children will become poor parents who will produce more poor and problematic children.

The solution to this issue is long term. We have to invest in the education of our children so that we can produce professionals, values… Continue

21st Century Classrooms?
