Waste Reduction Week (WRW) Canada Monday, October 19th to Sunday, October 25th.
The 2009 theme, Too Good To Waste, emphasizes conserving earth's resources to make life on the planet sustainable. We humans always talk about "saving our earth; saving our planet", but the planet isn't going anywhere. We just need to make sure that it stays habitable, and maybe even enjoyable, for our species -- humans!
In 2009, the provincial and territorial WRW organizers across Canada are… Continue

Is Google’s “Sites” application the solution we’re looking for?
Following up on last week’s initial look into free tools for students to create and host an electronic portfolio of representational work, this week I am trying out Google Sites as a possible solution. Google Sites provides a free application for creating your own web site. Let’s… Continue

It took me awhile but now I can say that I am hooked on Social Networking! After playing around with many Web 2.0 tools like Wikis and Blogs, I didn't think that I could find a use for Social Networking such as Facebook. A co-worker encouraged me to try Facebook and within a few days I had numerous "Friends" and was instantly in touch with former students, family members and old friends. I moved to a new city a few years ago to start a new life and although I've been blessed with a great… Continue

So I have been getting lots of notes and the such as of late asking me to let a few people backstage, behind the scenes, into the kitchen to see how books get written, vetted, sold, and published.
Yes, I am a regular ol' high school English teacher working at Lynwood High in Los Angeles but I also moonlight as an author having published books with Disney, Scholastic, Recorded Books and, coming soon (I just… Continue

Schools have already endured harsh budget cuts this year. Now the governor is proposing to cut another $223 million from city schools. We must urge our lawmakers in Albany to protect our classrooms. Implementing such cuts at the midpoint of the school year would mean dismantling existing programs and reorganizing classes, which would be particularly disruptive for students. Remember -- kids don’t get a second chance.
Can you help out by participating in the UFT's fax… Continue

I am looking for research on the benefits of active or hands on learning. Can anyone point me to some? I am needing to define hands on learning, show the benefits in the classroom, how it is best incorporated, how it can keep students engaged, examples in schools, and how it can be integrated into the current classroom settings. Thanks for your help.

I've given Google Wave invites to a few Classroom 2.0 participants and a few folks from the worldwide ReUse movement.
I've been thinking that there could be some mutual benefits to connecting the two discrete communities of people. Perhaps we'll do a bit of playing around with that on Google Wave once a few more folks get connected.
Google Wave certainly seems to have lots of potential.
I am so looking forward to the weekend so I can play around with some of the tools I have discovered this week. Most recently xtranormal.com and the ability to make an animated video in minutes. It's clunky and a little bumpy but I never lost any work. The students reacted well to the presentations and tomorrow the students will give it a test drive.
Not doing too poorly in developing the habits needed to keep blogging at leat once per week. Finished reading Will Richardson's book,… Continue

I have updated the JS Maths Wiki with some student contributions. Inequalities with examples and audio explanations. Listen while you try your homework.
My students and I have had our wave accounts for about a week now. We are, as expected, impressed. We are trying/toying with the idea of building a wave gadget in our Java class, but can not get GWT to work on Ubuntu?…
