NBC News Launches Social Learning Network

NBC News now has a community for middle and high school learners. NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, has partnered in the project: a patented, MIT developed, cue card-based platform called iCue (Immerse, Connect, Understand, and Excel). The site will be a combination media player, game arcade, discussion forum, note-taking space, and trading card venue. The students can watch streaming videos from NBC News and flip the stories' Cue-Cards over to find out more and discuss the… Continue

Tech Bytes For The Tech-Starved

I'm starting a new habit of sending what I'm calling Tech Bytes; short, informative email snacks about tech. Sometimes I'll quote other articles or blogs and sometimes I'll write my own content--whatever I can to to whet the appetite or increase knowledge. My audience will be friends, family, and educators who have shown a craving or slight hunger for tech-knowledge. I don't know if anyone will actually read these but I'm sending them anyway. It's not really any different than blogging; we are… Continue

Starting up...

So as a young teacher who thought of as pretty swift with ICT and new technologies it was great for me to go to warrnambool friday and watch Jess McCullough in action, she really filled me in on all the bizzo with things like nings, wikis and blogs my prin had been talking about. After a good look through some of this stuff i cant wait to get it into the classroom. Im particularly excited about vokis, which i think are quite rad, and i can picture the look on some faces as they set it up, and… Continue

It's been a looong time, CR2.0!

So it's been well over a year that I've been on this network and my life has changed dramatically in that time. In fact, as a launching point, I should give CR2.0 the full credit it deserves.

I know that the network catches grief about how the conversations here never change, and as I come back and look again at some of them, I think I may tend to agree. But that's ok!! I've been launched into another, different world that seems to fit me, but there are more and more teachers coming… Continue

To Parents with Love...

Cross posted on educatorslog.in

It is dreadful when we hear of children choosing to take their own lives. This is about suicides committed by young children, usually in their teens. How would you as a parent feel when you read about such an act been committed? Does it not conjure up images of the goings on in that family? Most of the times it is human interactions that are in question. The first reaction is shock, followed by sympathy. Then we… Continue

What will you do if you found out that you are a robot?

Getting a que from Helen I asked several of my Summer Robotics class "What will they do if they found out that they are robots?" Here are their quick replies:

"If I found out that I'm a robot, I will just tell some members of my family whom I trust most to keep it a secret. I will help them if I had more abilities like teach them how to play the guitar."

Audrey Sarai P. Manabat, 12 years old

" I will be proud as a robot, because I was built for a cause, instead… Continue

WORKING??

I think I have corrected all of my problems now. It seems that the major problem was IE. Now that I have tried using Firefox everything seems fine. Let's hope that this trend continues and I may blog until my heart is complete.

Content vs Stuff that actually matters

Is it important to know stuff?

Of course it is but how does knowing stuff help when looking through thousands of lines of computer code because a program crashes without any error messages? How can knowing stuff help you manage a financial crisis at your company? If I read Shakespeare, will that allow me to work effectively in a team to brainstorm ideas to improve productivity of my company's manufacturing line? By the way, two of the members live in China and one lives in Europe and… Continue

Digital immigrants or digital natives? A discussion of digital competence… A spectrum, not a dichotomy!

My new Classroom2.0 friend Jan Smith commented on my recent blog (re)post and I thought I would add the post here since it was a Classroom2.0 discussion that prompted the post in the first place:

Mother's Day

Thanks to Classroom 2.0, I added Voicethread to my list of options in creating Mother's Day greetings this year. Students drew an image in Kid Pix, saved it as a jpeg and put it into the shared folder. Then we put the images into voicethread and each child recorded a mother's day greeting. Mothers were given the URL to the voicethread and invited to comment on their child's work. To include a sample of the… Continue

Where to start with web2.0

I was asked to present at a conference for regional teachers in SW Victoria, Australia today. The conference was called "It is a digital thing" and was held at Deakin University in Warrnambool. My topic was 'where to start with web2.0' so I am sharing the powerpoint presentation that I spoke along to, for any interested parties. Please note that these are my personal opinions and based on my relatively brief experience in its use.…

Moodle und Web 2.0

Today I would like to draw your attention to an excellent Blog of my colleague Ulrike Montgomery who has collected and structured information and material for the use of web 2.0 and moodle for teaching. Here is her blog:

"Was ist Web2.0????

Die Verbindung Moodle+Web2.0 bietet zahlreiche Möglichkeiten für den Unterricht. Der Vorteil besteht darin, dass die Kursräume interessanter und optisch… Continue
