I'm sending out messages to everyone I know right now, and this classroom20 network is no exception. (I've also sent this out on other Ning networks you may be a part of.) My name is Alyshia Olsen; I am a 20 year old college student from Olin College of Engineering. I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham, MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. Since you are in the 'connecting content and technology' group, I thought you might be interested! Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:
Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.
Our project, titled Alight Learning, is currently trying to win an idea competition on Ideablob.com You can find us at http://ideablob.com/3975 . We would love your support in the form of a vote within the next couple days, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets at many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving, but at least it's a start.
Feel free to email me back, check out alightlearning.com, anything you like!
Cheers for that Gavin. I hope to get the application off by the end of the week Just had 1st day back (term Four) spot of testing and athletics were on todays to do list. The Children worked on their learning powerpoint, sort of a more structured blog.
Great recommendation to pick my 3. It's tough . . . I'm on Ning, I have 3 blogs on wordpress, I manage 3 websites, and I'm on Friendfeed, Twitter, Plurk, and FBook. I can't decide how to prioritize my SM time. I guess the first I'd have to let go of is Plurk. Suppose I'll start there.
Nice beginning thoughts..Do you have facebook? let me know. I would like to also continue conversation there..
With so many social networking sites, I struggle to maintain ongoing conversation. Thus, response is usually slow, from my part. My incentive with facebook is that it connects me to friends all over..one place, one click.
Hi Gavin, Just found your blog while searching for info on Life in Al Ain. I am looking to come to the UAE for work. At present I'm teaching yr 5-6 here in Christchurch. Hows the advisors role going as this is a position that i'm interested in as i have friends over there doing the samething. It would be great to here from you Paul.
It's always a pressure to meet someone who is also into video here. I am working on a screenplay for a feature at the moment and would be grateful if you can read it and pass me your comment. you could send me your email address so i can send it there. Thank You!
Just watched your new video on Dubai - trying to get an idea about your new surroundings. Good grief! You are in paradise! Is it ridiculous to ask if you are pleased with your new position?
Gavin, I'm looking for newer high end widgets for use on Ning pages. I especially like the audio player and slideshow kiosk on this page. Can you recommend a good spot to explore? Seems like there's something new each nanosecond. Cannot keep up!
So good to hear from you!
Yes, Gavin, it is...And how GARDNER ESQUE of you...(the application of all that we are learning in new and different ways...) BTW...Have you read A WHOLE NEW MIND by Daniel H. Pink....similar thought processes...Gardner and Pink say similar things about this in their work...Gardner re: education; Pink re: the business world.
LoL..Gavin..welcome to the reality of it all..yes, internet access. In working with or in another country much different in internet infrastructure as compared to our own towns...flexibility is crucial for several key factors: time, identity, cultural fabric, sensitivity..so, I am looking forward to your stories that impact your own thinking.
