I Taught My Teen Well!

Posted on April 16, 2007 at 5:57pm 0 Comments

My 14-year-old daughter noticed that I was using my real picture on this group and said let me know that she didn't think it was a smart thing for me to do, considering what I've been telling her. That's why I have a new image made with Photoshop filters. It's nice to know that my kids listen to me once in a while.... for seconds at a time.

Of course, there are pics of her on Facebook taken by her friends and anyone can copy and save them! I've made sure that she's enabled…

Students can say anthing they want!

I received an e-mail from one of my lists - Safekids. In it was a blurb about a case in which a court ordered that a middle-school student who was put on probation for criticizing a principal on Myspace in an "expletive-laden entry " has the right of free-speech. Earlier, a judge had declared the remarks obscene. The court of appeals found that her remarks were protected as political speech "under both the state and federal constitutions because they dealt with school policy" and said that…

Learning to Use Technology in the Classroom

Posted on April 12, 2007 at 5:01pm 1 Comment

I would like to formally study educational technology through a Canadian on-line course however not too many of these exist. The great irony is that I e-mailed the director of one program and haven't heard back after a month. On-line, hu?

Hi Shayne--

It's great to so many Canucks in here in CR 2.0. You might want to join a group called "Canadians Mashup". If you join, please use the Welcome forum at http://www.classroom20.com/group/canadianmashup/forum/topics/welcome-to-canadian-mashup to introduce yourself.

Try http://del.icio.us/kwhobbes as there is some game information there. I'd also look into club penguin http://clubpenguin.com/ for some games and interaction. I'll drop by later and give you some more ideas.

Hey Shayne, how's it going? Haven't forgotten about the games just been really busy. You might want to check out my delicious feed as I'm gathering information for the horizon project about games.

Shayne, Frogger is a great game! I still play it with my boys. They like to see the frog get squished too much! As for games for the class, what do you want to do? Do you want to build a game or have students play? There is software for game creation (I'd have to dig it up) that is basic. Let me know what you're doing. ADHD is a wonderful gift - I don't see it as a problem - especially now that I have learned to focus it better. With all I've read about it - one of my sons is definitely ADHD and we think one of the girls is too - and we'd decided to see it as gift that we need to work with.

Shayne,
It's good to have your voice added to ours! I enjoyed your discussion of forum organization under "can somebody explain this"--especially since this is my first experience of a social forum. I have no ruler to measure against, and don't know what other options people are used to!
Looking forward to continuing our discussion.

Sue

Somebody sent me an add as friend message and either my hand slipped and I declined by accident (sorry) or the tiny elves that live in the computer ate your message (again, sorry). Yeah, yeah, I know I teach computer use but ..um, I was multi-tasking and my kids were yelling "Mommmeeee" in the background (esp. the 22 year old) and well, it's a computer. Yup, blame the computer :) .
