My blog

I want to provide educators with a link to my blog: http://speechlanguagepathologysharing.blogspot.com/. I created the blog to share speech-language materials that I personally designed. Even if a educator is not in speech or special education, I believe that my blog can be appreciated by those in regular education. Regular educators might still be able to use my materials with their students, or they can just see how I use… Continue

Interesting Site - January 11, 2009

Vicki Davis's recent article in Edutopia described how her students use PLN for their research projects. Before reading this article, I always thought of a PLN as a way for teachers to organize their personal learning.

The Students are Teaching Me!

It's amazing what students are capable of accomplishing when given rich, meaningful tasks to complete. I just finished uploading my latest classroom podcast, and I am still smiling as I listen to the student responses to the following question: "Do you think that it is possible for a young student to make a difference in the world? What could you do in the next few months to make a difference in your home, school, community, and world as a whole?" I… Continue

Curriculum Mapping

I teach in a small, rural school. At times, many times, we have to be creative due to our lack of resources, whether that be financial or physical. Needless to say, I do not have, what I would call, a usable curriculum map or pacing guide. I smell a new project! Normally, I merely "borrow" whatever I can from seasoned teachers, internet sites, etc. My situation is a little different because we are a Catholic school. I have to follow their content standards which means I can't just copy from… Continue

Technology in the Classroom?

We are all talking about Web 2.0 and how wonderful it is to use. It's the best thing since Slice Bread. Every conference is about all of the tools that can be used to make classroom use so much easier. Yes, I love everything about it. I love the conferences and the presentations. In fact, almost everything I see is about Web 2.0 now. After being in education and growing up with the Internet since the early 1990s, I have been very fortunate to have computers in my classrooms with the Internet. I… Continue

Student Messaging Poll

Please take a minute to answer my one question poll on student preferred tools for messaging. What do you know about your student's favorite method of communicating? http://twtpoll.com/t67coj Thanks for your input. Results available after voting.
Sorry for any cross-posting. I know this is very unscientific.

Strategies - Looking for the best "blend"

I strive to provide the best instruction I can for my students, as I believe most of us do. I want to incorporate new technologies, but I don't want to lose things that have proven successful - hence the blend.

One thing I do that works well for myself and my students is using an interactive notebook. This is a paper strategy. You can read about that here at my webpage under teacher resources http://snipurl.com/mrsgannon

GUIYANG PRIMARY SCHOOL, CHINA

What’s it like to go to elementary school in China? I was able to witness a primary school. Like the high school, students wore uniforms and worked as a seamless member of a larger group. Again, the students were fully engaged and on task. Again, the teacher controlled the learning environment and used a projected PowerPoint to aid in her instruction. Like the high school, students waited for the bell to ring and the teacher to formally begin class. Students laid their heads on the desk and… Continue

Teachers forfeit raise?

I was watching Fox and Friends this morning and a story about a school that was asked to forfeit their raise in order for everyone to keep their jobs. It was reported that if everyone, in this particular school system, agreed to give up their raise, then none of the teachers would be laid off. Talk about being put in a tough situation. On one hand, you want to be a humanitarian but, on the other hand you need to take care of your own family. There is also the issue of those teachers close to… Continue
