Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.
Malcolm Forbes (1919 - 1990), in Forbes Magazine
I've decided to use this blog space (at least for now) to include the words of others I think are useful to think about, whether as something to aspire to or as something to avoid. This one, of course, is something I try to keep in mind each day. Teaching students to THINK is…

Quite a few members of classroom 20 are wondering about the possible use of ning in the classroom.
Questions that arise are mostly connected to security and privacy.
There is a social network for school children, their parents and teachers, http://www.imbee.com
The blurb from the site claims this:
imbee is designed to provide parents with visibility of their child's activities on imbee. You have easy to use tools to guide…

I couldn't think of anything to use as a post title, so I figured I might as well use that battle cry. It just elicits feelings of excitement and hunger, although most likely confused and misguided.. haha!!!
This year my class and I will be working with our school's library media specialist on a research project involving the native american tribes of New York. We are looking for a class (preferably 4th grade) to coordinate with. This promises to be a lot of fun!
I also plan on…

I will be working on an interesting multimedia presentation and I was wondering if anyone knows of some copyright friendly sites that would allow students to download educational videos in order to incorporate parts of the video into MovieMaker. We can't access Youtube in our district, so that is not an option.
Thanks so much,
Chris

From what seems like very humble beginnings and the excitement of seeing power point for the first time, I am now amazed at the amount of resources that we have the potential to use in our classrooms.
In the institution that I work in we use the Blackboard system and are currently running at what I believe is version 6.2?
The uptake from teaching staff has been limited and I think there is still the fear that if you download information into the space you may not ever be able…

Sorry this is a cross post from my blogger blog, simply because I want to get the word out.
Wikispaces provide free, ad-free, password protected wikis for K12 educational use.
Until now anyone needing to align their wiki from right to left (Hebrew or Arabic) had to add a special tag around the RTL text. Not any more!
With the help…

I’ve just enjoyed a fresh glass of lemonade. The summer has been a very hectic one. I’m doing way more work building houses that I thought I would be and this has really cut into the time I was expecting to be
doing other things. I have not been keeping up with my reading or my
writing as I had planned but, I’ve learned, that’s sometimes how it
goes. See, in a life before education, I worked in the construction
sector as a painter. It evolved from a summer job to a…
